Preparing for Altitude

A Gentle Guide to the Sacred Valley & Cusco

We are so excited to welcome you to the Sacred Valley of Peru — a place of breathtaking mountains, ancient history, and truly unforgettable beauty. Because many of our guests will be flying into Cusco, here are a few gentle tips to help you prepare for the altitude and feel your best throughout the trip.

Cusco
11,150 ft
3,399 m
Sacred Valley
~9,300 ft
Urubamba & Ollantaytambo
Machu Picchu
7,972 ft
2,430 m

This is why our plan is for guests to fly into Cusco and be transported directly to the Sacred Valley, where it is often easier to acclimate before visiting Machu Picchu and ending the trip in Cusco.

Before You Travel

A little preparation can go a long way. In the weeks leading up to the trip, we recommend:

  • Hydrating well before travel and during your flight
  • Adding incline walking or light cardio to your routine to support stamina
  • Prioritizing sleep in the days before departure
  • Limiting alcohol the day before and the first day or two at altitude
  • Packing electrolytes, especially if you tend to get dehydrated while traveling
  • Bringing any usual medications, supplements, or remedies you rely on while traveling

Some guests may also like to prepare with gentle holistic supports such as chlorophyll water, minerals/electrolytes, ginger chews, peppermint tea, or other remedies that already feel good in their body. Please note that holistic options can be supportive for overall wellness, but they are not a guaranteed prevention or treatment for altitude sickness.

Consider Speaking With Your Doctor

If you are over 60, pregnant, have a history of altitude sickness, or have any heart, lung, blood pressure, sleep apnea, anemia, or other significant medical conditions, we recommend checking in with your physician before travel.

You may also want to ask your doctor whether a prescription medication such as acetazolamide / Diamox is appropriate for you. The CDC notes that acetazolamide can be used in certain travelers to help prevent or treat altitude illness, but it should be discussed with a medical provider first.

When You Arrive

Once you arrive in Cusco, our transportation will bring guests directly to the Sacred Valley. Even though the scenery is exciting, the first day is the time to move slowly and let your body adjust. We recommend:

  • Take it easy on arrival day
  • Walk slowly and avoid rushing
  • Eat lighter meals at first
  • Sip water throughout the day
  • Avoid heavy alcohol the first 24–48 hours
  • Rest if you feel tired
  • Let someone know if you are not feeling well

Mild symptoms can include headache, fatigue, nausea, dizziness, shortness of breath with exertion, or difficulty sleeping. These symptoms are common at high altitude and often improve with rest, hydration, and time.

Local & Holistic Supports

In Peru, you may see coca tea or muña tea offered as traditional local remedies for altitude adjustment. Many travelers find them comforting. However, coca tea may not be appropriate for everyone and may affect drug testing, so use your discretion and speak with your doctor if this is a concern.

Hotels in Cusco and the Sacred Valley are very accustomed to guests adjusting to altitude. Many hotels have oxygen available by request or can help coordinate medical support if needed, but we recommend confirming directly with your hotel.

When to Seek Help

Please seek medical attention right away if you experience severe or worsening headache, repeated vomiting, confusion, difficulty walking, chest tightness, blue lips, or shortness of breath while resting. These symptoms are not something to “push through.” The CDC notes that mental status changes, trouble walking, and breathlessness at rest can be warning signs of serious altitude illness.

A Gentle Reminder

This trip is not a race. Peru invites us to slow down, breathe deeply, and be present. Give yourself permission to rest, hydrate, and ease into the mountains. We cannot wait to share this sacred place with you.

Please note: This information is intended for general travel preparation only and is not medical advice. Guests with health concerns should consult their physician before traveling to high altitude.

Practical Things

Documents

Phone Prep

Two things to set up before you board — both free

Set up Google Translate

No Spanish needed to celebrate with us — but a translation app makes menus, taxis, and markets much friendlier.

  1. Download the Google Translate app
  2. In the app, download Spanish for offline use
  3. Try the camera button — point it at any menu or sign and it translates in place

WhatsApp & staying connected

WhatsApp is how Peru communicates — hotels, drivers, guides, and Ana Maria’s team all use it. Download it and make sure your account works before you fly.

For service, check whether your carrier includes international roaming (many US plans cover Peru), or grab an eSIM through an app like Airalo before the trip. Hotel Wi-Fi covers the rest.

Style Inspiration

Outfits & Andean Traditions

Please note: this is just a guide and absolutely not mandatory

Not sure what to wear? For our celebration in the Sacred Valley, we’re envisioning an elegant garden evening with the Andes as our backdrop — romantic, warm, and a little spirited. Flowing fabrics, expressive color, and natural textures feel right at home.

Mountain View Welcome Dinner

An evening to gather with the bride and groom overlooking the beautiful Sacred Valley.

Here’s a glimpse of the colors and rituals that will welcome you.

La Pachamanca

A Feast from the Earth

That evening, dinner is cooked the way the Andes have cooked for a thousand years: meats and vegetables seasoned with mountain herbs and buried over fire-hot stones, so the earth itself becomes the oven. In Quechua, pacha means earth and manka means pot — the feast is unearthed and shared as an offering of gratitude to Pachamama, Mother Earth.

What's the weather like in August?

August is the dry season in Peru—one of the best times to visit! You can expect sunny days with minimal chance of rain.

Daytime: Pleasant and sunny, around 60-70°F (15-20°C)

Evenings: Cool to cold, can drop to 35-45°F (2-7°C)

We recommend packing layers—light clothing for the day and warm layers (jacket, sweater) for evenings. The sun is strong at high altitude, so bring sunscreen and sunglasses!
